Inter-Fiorentina, the Thuram incident: Mariani changes his penalty decision
The referee initially pointed to the spot before changing his mind. Marelli: “The standard is right, but these mistakes must be eliminated.”
The 2-1 win over Fiorentina on October 25 left one incident involving Marcus Thuram under the spotlight. The Inter striker went down inside the penalty area and referee Mariani initially pointed to the spot. A few moments later, however, the official changed his decision and allowed play to continue.
VAR did not intervene to overturn the call, and the contact became one of the most debated moments of the match. Luca Marelli also reviewed the situation and considered the standard applied during the game to be consistent. The former referee nevertheless stressed the need to reduce similar episodes: in his view, the overall approach can be accepted, but mistakes in these evaluations must be corrected.
For Inter, the incident came after a hard-fought victory, their third consecutive official success when including the 3-1 win at Bologna and the 1-0 Champions League victory over Shakhtar. The Nerazzurri return to action on Wednesday, October 28 at 18:30 away to Venezia in Serie A, before facing Milan on October 31 at 20:45.
